The Southfield Center Parent Lecture Series

Let's face it—Being a parent is a stressful job. But being the parent of a child with ADHD means added pressure from managing the impulsivity, distractibility, and inattention. The Southfield Center Parent Support Group is here to help.

Our group is facilitated by psychologist Dr. MaryJean MacDonald. Participants decide topics, and navigate the social, educational, and emotional world of their child's ADHD through collaboration and support from other parents.

Individualized Executive Functions Coaching and Academic Tutoring
Executive Functions Coaching
Executive functioning is a set of mental operations which enable an individual to disengage from the immediate context and control behavior, emotions and cognition in line with task demands and future goals. Executive functions include: inhibition, shifting attention, task initiation, working memory, planning, organization and self-monitoring. An executive functioning deficit may manifest as becoming easily distracted, forgetting to write down assignments, having difficulty getting started on tasks, and ultimately, feeling overwhelmed and performing inconsistently. Executive functions coaches evaluate a student's level of functioning and implement interventions designed to improve emotional, behavioral and cognitive control by shaping behaviors and helping students develop compensatory skills and strategies. The ultimate goal of executive functions coaching is to provide support that will foster independent learning. $120/hr at the Center, $140/hr at your home.

Academic Tutoring
We offer academic tutoring for students in grades K-12. Subject areas include: language arts, writing, math, science, social studies, history, and Spanish. In addition to being experts in their field, our experienced tutors are required to complete a basic executive functions training. This enables our team to recognize students' unique learning profiles and foster independence by teaching effective learning techniques. $90/hr at Center, $115/hr at your home
