Afunctional behavior assessment is a problem-solving process to determine the underlying cause of a child’s problem behavior in the classroom. This information is used to develop behavioral recommendations to prevent the problem behavior, teach and reinforce alternative and desired behaviors, and extinguish the problem behavior. Here at the Southfield Center, we offer three tiers of assessment depending on the intensity of the problem behavior:
- Tier I: Brief Behavioral Consultation – A psychologist will interview teachers, observe the child, and develop a list of prioritized behavioral recommendations to be shared with the child’s school team. This is appropriate for students with mild problem behaviors.
- Tier II: Ongoing Behavioral Consultation – A psychologist will interview teachers,
- observe the child, collect data, and develop an action plan. The psychologist will meet with the child’s school team on an ongoing basis to implement interventions in a staggered and ongoing basis and to monitor the child’s progress. This is appropriate for students with moderate problem behaviors.
- Tier III: Comprehensive FBA – A Board Certified Behavioral Analyst (BCBA) will interview teachers, observe the child, collect data, and write a comprehensive report that describes the function of the child’s behavior and includes a comprehensive list of behavioral recommendations.
