Threat assessment represents an important component of a comprehensive approach to school safety that gives schools an alternative to zero tolerance discipline policies that have proven to be ineffective and counterproductive. Our threat assessment is intended to prevent violence and involves both assessment and recommendations for intervention. Threat assessment involves determining whether a student poses a threat of violence (i.e., they have intent and means to carry out the threat). Our assessment is comprised of time with the student during which the student completes some assessment measures; time with the parent(s); and time in discussion with relevant school personnel. Within 24 hours, we provide a verbal response to the school. Within one week, a written report is released.
